Insurance for residence card
Health policy required for application for temporary and permanent residence permit in Poland
Insurance vs. residence card
A foreigner applying for a residence card in Poland must prove that he has health insurance. This can be a private policy or notification to the National Health Service by the employer.
The provincial office verifies the validity of insurance when processing an application. Lack of a valid policy may be a reason for denial of a residence permit.
A private policy is a quick solution for people who are not yet reported to the National Health Service - such as freelancers, students and people waiting for an employment contract.

Types of residence cards vs. insurance
Temporary stay
Temporary residence permit (up to 3 years). Policy or NFZ required for the entire term of the card. Most common type of application.
Permanent residence
Permanent residence permit (indefinite). Documentation of health insurance as of the date of application required.
EU Resident
A residence permit for a long-term EU resident. Requirements analogous to those for permanent residence - valid policy or NFZ.
How do I get insurance for my residence card?
1
Check requirements
The Provincial Office requires a policy covering medical expenses in the territory of Poland. Check whether your employer has reported you to the National Health Service.
2
Select a policy variant
If you don't have NHF, buy a private policy. Minimum amount: EUR 30,000. The coverage must cover the entire period of your stay.
3
Submit documents
Attach the policy or certificate from the National Health Service to the application for a residence card. Documents in Polish or with a sworn translation.
4
Pick up the card
After a positive decision, pick up your residence card at the Provincial Office. Remember to maintain continuity of insurance.
